Welcome to the first AAF Lubbock Member Showcase of 2016! This month we spoke with Steven Pence. He’s the media coordinator at RD Thomas, and serves as our education chair on the AAF Lubbock Board of Directors.

Q: Where were you born and raised?

A:  I was born and raised in Plano, Texas.

Q: Did you always want to work in advertising? Or was something like lawyer or football player at the top of your list?

A: Not always. As a child, I wanted to be a professional baseball player.

Q: What’s your daily routine as a media coordinator?

A:  Check email, make some calls and start working on any project milestones that are due that day.

Q: What made you decide to get involved in AAF, and what would you tell professionals considering joining?

A: When Rico Vega was working at RD Thomas, he mentioned the prospect of joining AAF to me. Since I’ve joined, I’ve made a lot of connections and friends within the advertising community of Lubbock.

Q: What is your favorite craft beer? And are you a hops or malt guy?

A: I am more of a hops guy, definitely. My favorite craft beer right now is from a little place in Glenwood Springs, Colorado called Casey Brewing and Blending.

Q: How many times have you seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens now?

A:  Only four times.

Q: Let’s play a game of Star Wars word association. Tell me the first word that comes to mind when you think of each of these characters…

Luke Skywalker: Majestic

Kylo Ren: Nostalgic

R2-D2: Loyal

Jar Jar Binks: Poodoo

Q: What do you do for fun or for a hobby?

A: Cooking, I like to experiment in the kitchen. I’m always trying something new and exciting.

Q: It’s Friday afternoon. What do you typically do after work or over the weekend?

A:  My girlfriend and I will usually cook something good for dinner and unwind with a movie. Homemade margarita pizza and a comedy movie are good for the soul.

Q: Which social media platform is your favorite?

A: Instagram.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?

A:  Italian Garden, It’s BYOB and cozy, what more can you ask for? The pink sauce is good!

Q: If you were a contestant on American Idol, what song would you sing at your audition?

A: “Space Oddity” by David Bowie. RIP.

Q: What’s your favorite gift you received this Christmas and who gave it to you?

A: Probably a Bluetooth speaker I received in a Secret Santa gift exchange. I love listening to music when I’m getting ready for work in the morning.

Q: What’s a unique thing about you that most people don’t know?

A:  I was a part of JROTC in high school and competed on my high school’s rifle team for competitive shooting.
