Welcome to the November LAF Member Showcase! Each month we tell you a little about a different member of the club so we can learn more about each other. This month we spoke with Holly Kennedy, Director of Marketing and Communications at Lubbock Economic Development Alliance and Visit Lubbock.

Holly has served in a number of roles in the marketing and communications field in West Texas. She’s a Texas Tech University graduate, and is a past LAF president. But let’s dive a little deeper…

HollyKennedy_croppedQ: Where were you born and raised?

A: I was born and raised right here in Lubbock.

Q: How did you get your start in communications?

A: I think my passion for communications started developing when I got involved in yearbook while in high school. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up being the editor of the yearbook my senior year.  From there, I attended Texas Tech University where I majored in broadcast journalism and public relations. My first job out of college was as reporter for KVII news in Amarillo, and I’ve been in communications ever since.

Q: Did you always want to work in marketing for a career? Or did you start wanting to do something different?

A: I have known since high school that my career would involve some component of marketing, communications and journalism. Luckily, I have had the opportunity to work in broadcast, the agency world, health care and now the tourism and economic development sectors.

Q: You’re involved in many civic and professional organizations in Lubbock. What do you think is unique about Lubbock Advertising Federation from others?

A: I love the Lubbock Advertising Federation because it really gives members the opportunity to showcase, and hopefully be recognized for their work at the annual ADDY Awards. I’m always inspired, and I’m always so proud of the work our team produces.

Q: Word has it you travel a lot in your job. What are some of your favorite places to visit? (Other than Lubbock, of course.)

A: Lubbock will always be the No. 1 destination for me. However, when I do get away, I love the beach, New York City and Savannah, Georgia!

Q: Imagine it’s Friday afternoon, what do you typically do after work and over the weekend?

A: My boyfriend and I have a tradition that we call Filet Friday. We grill steak and unwind from the week and really just take it easy and relax.

Q: Do you have any pets?

A: My heart has been stolen by two weenie dogs, Tim & Rebel!

Q: Who were the last three people you sent text messages to?

A: One was a group text with my fabulous friends: Deborah & Ashley. The other one was to my boyfriend, Charles Russell and the third one was to Alyssa Kitten, my amazingly talented co-worker.

Q: What do you do for fun or for a hobby?

A: I love to read, travel and workout with my personal trainer (just don’t let her know that I actually enjoy it or she will be even tougher on me).

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?

A: The West Table Kitchen & Bar is on the top of my list right now, but Lubbock has so many wonderful restaurants, it’s a close race!

Q: Who was your mentor or role model growing up?

A: I would have to say Ashley Rodriquez and Mandy Lawrence. They were both anchors and reporters when I was an intern at NewsChannel 11. They always took time to coach me, as well as give me insight into the profession. I will be forever grateful to them!

Q: Facebook or Instagram?

A: Both! And I’m trying to get better at Twitter!

Q: What one famous person would you most want to have dinner with and why?

A: Taylor Swift – no explanation needed. ; )

Q: What was your favorite cartoon or kids’ show growing up?

A: I loved watching Tom & Jerry with my little sister on Saturday mornings.

Q: What are the top three things on your “bucket list?”

A: Travel to Ireland, buy a house with a pool and write a book.

Q: If you were a contestant on American Idol, which song would you sing for your first audition?

A: These Boots Are Made for Walking – Nancy Sinatra

Q: If you’re going on a road trip, what three things do you just have to take with you?

A: My phone, heels, and I cannot sleep without a fan, so my portable fan would definitely has to come with me.

Q: What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

A: Butterfinger – my mom makes the best Butterfinger ice cream in the world!

Q: What’s a unique thing about you that most people don’t know?

A: I was Miss Teen Dance 1999 & Miss Senior Dance 2001…if only I could twirl and leap like I did back then.
